ERC Work

Preventive Blindness

Eye diseases like cataracts, trachoma, and diabetic retinopathy can lead to blindness when, in fact, they’re either treatable or preventable. The reason people live with blindness is that they can’t access or afford quality eye health care.

ERC is on a mission to help the needy with affordable surgeries. Your generous donations will be utilized to perform surgeries for people from marginalized and economically backward communities.

Our work is driven by a constant focus on

Protect & Prolong Vision

Research into Sight-Saving Treatments

The organization is dedicated to advancing the field of eye care through research, with a specific focus on developing treatments that preserve sight, reduce visual impairment, and prevent blindness. This commitment to research demonstrates a forward-thinking approach and a desire to contribute to medical advancements.

Improve Quality of Life

Beyond preventing blindness, there's a broader mission to enhance the overall quality of life for people of all ages. This suggests a holistic approach to healthcare, considering the broader impact of visual health on individuals' well-being.

ERC Activities

Camps

The Eye Research Centre has signed an MOU with 10 districts in Tamil Nadu to conduct eye screening camps and perform free eye surgery for people from economically backward communities.

Our camps are conducted across Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruppattur, Tiruvannamalai, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi Districts of Tamil Nadu in association with various other like-minded organizations.

Patient Screening

At camp sites, we diagnose people for any issues related to their Eyes. Those who are advised for Eye Surgery in camps are shifted to our ERC Ward at Chennai (Greams Road).

Patient Lodging

Patients are brought to ERC Ward through our vehicles (a minibus). We provide them with accommodation for 3-5 days, food, and other basic requirements. The ERC ward has separate sections for men and women, and a total of 100 patients can be accommodated at any given time.

Pre OP & Post OP

All required pre-surgery tests are conducted. After that, the patients are taken to our base hospital in Chennai (Alwarpet), and we perform the required surgery at no cost. Post-surgery patients are shifted to the ERC Ward for rest and recuperation. Later, the patients are given sufficient medication and are dropped off at the respective villages through ERC vehicles.

Surgical Procedures

We are conducting about 60–70 eye screening camps per month in rural areas, leading to about 700–800 surgeries per month. The prevalence of cataracts is increasing day by day, especially among rural people. Our goal is to perform about 100,000 surgeries by 2035.

Eye Screening for School Children

Addressing the prevalence of myopia in schoolchildren is one of our major objectives in exercising our role to build a visionary India. Every year, we conduct a special screening program for schoolchildren in association with the Tamil Nadu government under “Kannoli Kaappom Thittam.” Under the above program, schoolchildren who are diagnosed with refractive errors are given free spectacles.
